| Donnie Dobro
Scott, a native of Alexander County, North Carolina, started playing guitar
in 1960 when he was 14. Like most young people in the rural South, Donnie
listened to the late night radio stations. I can recall lying in bed,
hearing the Stanley Brothers''Rank Stranger' and thinking it was the lonesomest song of fall. He especially waited for Flatt and Scruggs in hopes of hearing Josh Gravesn the Dobro. During his five years in the Navy and then ten as a truck driver, he heard |

music from all over the world and every region of the United States. In 1977, he bought his first resophonic guitar and found he had the knack of making it sound good. He was seen at so many bluegrass festivals, he became known as Donnie Dobro. This CD, Generations, is a family project including his wife Barbara and son Joseph. From the well-honed fiddling of Joe Meadows to the rustic voices in the Little Church Chorus, from the old Scots-Irish tradition of Star of the County Down up to the present moment, with new songs like the haunting Leaving Tug Valley, this CD includes a wide range of material from diverse sources while respecting tradition. Donnie makes the dobro speak with I'll Be All Smiles Tonight and Lovesick Blues, for hardcore fans of the resophonic guitar. |
Here's what Bluegrass Unlimited had
to say about this recording in their December 2001 issue: Donnie Scott is a maestro of the
resonator guitar ... Scott proves to be both an adept musician and serious
composer with such entries as the instrumental The Star Of The County
Down and vocal pieces Leaving Tug Valley, Yesterday
I Didn't Know, and Everyone Has To Answer. Lead vocalist
Lujean Michael imparts a sincere earthy quality to the proceedings on
such numbers as Stormy Horizons, My Destiny, and
others. One particular highlight is Scott's instrumental interpretation
of Ode To Joy combined with Bluebells Of Scotland.
While Donnie Dobro Scott is primarily a regional artist, the
contents of Generations should appeal to just about any serious
student of the resonator guitar. |
