Tom Mindte - Swing Mandolin and

Swing Vocal with Amy Ferebee

Swing Mandolin – You’ll learn swing chords on the mandolin – 6th, major 7th, minor 7th, diminished chords and others. We’ll work on some standard tunes from the swing / jazz repertoire and how to improvise on your solos. It’s not as difficult as you think to figure out most swing chord progressions – there are four or five that are used frequently. Let’s try some horn keys – F, B flat. E flat and A flat. It’s not too hard, once you get that hang of it. It’s going to be fun and rewarding.

Some of These Days

While learning mandolin and listening to country music on the radio, I heard Homer and Jethro, a comic duo with cornball lyrics and world-class jazz musicianship. I thought “Maybe I can do some of that on the mandolin.” I’m still working on it after all these years. I have played in sever swing / jazz bands over the years including Razz’m Jazz’m, The Sunshine Skiffle Band, Buffalo Nickel Band – still swinging after 30 years. I am also currently performing in a  jazz duo with with vocalist / guitarist Ester Haynes.

I have developed a unique program of study for mandolin, that can be tailored for both reading and non-reading students. The program emphasizes proper technique, melody, scales, chords, and timing. Enough rudimentary theory is provided so the student can understand how the notes and chords fit the structure of each piece taught. I teach vocal harmony parts, as well.
